Cornelis (Cor) van der Zwalm (1894-1955)
Cornelis van der Zwalm was a Rotterdam painter born in 1884 who mainly painted harbour scenes. But he also made beautiful murals in Rotterdam.
Cornelis van der Zwalm was originally a boat worker and learned to paint in evening classes in Rotterdam. As the subject of his paintings and drawings he chose what was dear to him: ships and harbour views in and around Rotterdam. He was a rough man, a loner, who did not participate in exhibitions and did not join a painter’s society. That is why he has remained rather unknown to the general public. The maritime museum in Rotterdam has some of his drawings in possession.
